LGA Conservatives

The LGA Conservative Group is the national voice for Conservative Local Government. We are here to support both Conservative council groups and Conservative councillors. Conservatives are leading the way in local government, embracing the new localist agenda, protecting frontline services and offering value for money.

Statement from the Leader of the LGA Conservative Group, Cllr Izzi Seccombe OBE, in response to the Budget

“From the ‘Red Wall’ seats that voted Conservative for the first time at the last to election to traditional Conservative heartlands, this is a Budget that delivers for the whole nation.

“For local government there were a number of measures that were particularly welcome, including £500 million per annum from 2020/2021 to 2024/2025 to repair and prevent potholes, further allocations from the National Infrastructure Fund to support sustainable housing development and £5 billion to support the rollout of high speed broadband to the most isolated parts of the country.

“It was also good to receive confirmation that the Government will publish an English Devolution White Paper in the summer, setting out how it intends to meet its ambitions for full devolution across England.

“The Budget confirmed the extra £1 billion of additional funding for the adult social care in 2020/2021 that was announced in the Spending Round. Whilst this extra money is welcome, we continue to press for a long-term and sustainable solution to the crisis in adult social care and it is encouraging that the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care has written to parliamentarians in an attempt to find a cross-party consensus on reform.

“Finally, the announcements to help communities cope with Coronavirus - including £500 million in hardship funding for individuals and business rates relief measures – are particularly welcome. Over the coming weeks and months, I know that we in local government will be working with the Government to do all that we can to prevent the spread of the coronavirus and support those in our communities who become infected.”
