Leadership Essentials: Sport and Physical Activities for Officers

Leading the transformation of sport and physical activity in local communities

The LGA in partnership with Sport England are pleased to offer a 2.5 day fully funded residential programme for leaders and aspiring leaders within the Sport and Physical Activity remit. This is an opportunity for officers who are leaders and aspiring leaders, working towards a collaborative leadership approach both within their organisation and with other partners.

The Programme

The programme brings together existing and aspiring strategic leaders from across councils, local trusts and Active Partnerships with a common remit for physical activity and sport to support them to:

  • Better influence transformational change, ensuring physical activity and sport is seen as part of the solution to improving outcomes for communities and individuals.
  • Develop and enhance their collaborative leadership skills – focusing on strategic and collaborative leadership behaviours and co-designing and delivering transformational change.
  • Better interact across local systems with other service areas especially public health and health and wellbeing boards.
  • Better engage with local commissioning and procurement processes.
  • Improve their ability to work and influence at the political interface.
  • Better articulate their impact on outcomes.

The challenging two-and-a-half-day programme will include a mixture of speakers from Sport England, LGA and partner councils/organisations, group discussions and plenty of opportunity to network and share experiences with officers in similar roles.

The programme will focus on three main themes:

  • Understanding the changing environment – by focusing particularly on the world of health and social care, and how leisure providers are able to collaborate better through partnerships, commissioning and procurement processes.
  • Development of collaborative leadership skills – focusing on: strategic and collaborative leadership, including leadership behaviours; collaborating in transformational change; and working at the political interface.
  • Changing the system to change lives –focusing on, evidencing impact, systems thinking, insight and behaviour change to work with targeted audiences and facility efficiency and effectiveness.
